Twenty-eight Broadland food businesses had a new hygiene rating published during August. Twenty-four of them scored the top mark of 5.

Three were given a 4, which the Food Standards Agency describes as good. One, The Woodman in Old Catton, was given a 3, meaning generally satisfactory.

The month covered supermarkets, care homes, riverside pubs and a sourdough baker. Tesco in Drayton, the East of England Co-op in Acle and the Reedham Ferry Inn all came away with a 5.

Five of those businesses have no street address on the register. The Food Standards Agency withholds the address where a business operates from a private home, so a mobile caterer or a home baker shows only an outcode.

The wider picture

Broadland District Council’s register held 959 food businesses when it was read on 1 September. Of those, 903 carry a numbered rating, 29 are exempt and 27 are waiting for a first inspection.

The distribution is heavily weighted to the top. 791 of the 903 rated businesses hold a 5, or 87.6%. Another 86 hold a 4. Twenty-six sit at 3 or below.

The district still has exactly one zero, and it is the same one we reported in August: New China on Thunder Lane in Thorpe St Andrew, rated on 14 July. Seven weeks on, no new rating has been published for it.

One thing to keep in mind when reading any month’s figures: the register runs behind the inspectors. The newest Broadland rating published on 1 September was dated 21 August, so the last week and a half of the month had not appeared yet. Late August inspections will show up in September.

What it means for you

A rating reflects what an inspector found on one day. It is not a verdict on the food.

  • Every rated business can be looked up free on the FSA’s register, which is the only official source. Third party listings copy it and go stale.
  • A business that thinks its rating is wrong can appeal in writing to the council, and must be told the outcome within 21 days of the appeal being received.
  • A business can also ask for a re-visit once improvements are made, and can publish a “right to reply” that appears on the register next to the rating.
  • Concerns about a food business in Broadland go to the council, which runs the inspections. It takes reports through its food premises complaints pages.
