The Street in Acle shuts 1 to 7 October, Felthorpe lanes close in turn to 16 October, and buses replace every train out of Norwich on Sunday 11 October.

The closure to plan around this week is in Acle. The Street closes by Old Road from Thursday 1 to Wednesday 7 October. In Felthorpe, five lanes take turns to close in the daytime until 16 October, one at a time.

Woodbastwick Road at Blofield is due to reopen on 30 September. At Newton St Faiths, four gas main closures are still running at once.

The next big date is by rail. On Sunday 11 October, Greater Anglia is replacing trains with buses on every line out of Norwich that serves Broadland: to Stowmarket for London, to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft through Brundall and Acle, and to Sheringham through Salhouse and Wroxham.

National Highways lists no closure on the A47 in Broadland up to Sunday 4 October.

Since our last check on 27 September, the Trowse westbound exit slip closure on Monday night has run and finished. No entry on this list has reached its end date.

  • Tuesday 29 September: Drayton Wood Road at Hellesdon closes for carriageway repairs. It is also the deadline to object to the Reepham Road 50mph extension at Horsford.

The A47: clear in Broadland to 4 October

National Highways’ new seven-day report runs from Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October. It lists nothing on the A47 between Postwick and Acle, and nothing on the Broadland Northway.

The closures near the district in that report are:

  • Trowse westbound exit slip: 8pm on Monday 28 September to 6am on Tuesday, for communications work. This has now run.
  • A47 westbound, Harfrey’s roundabout to Gapton Hall, Great Yarmouth: 8pm to 6am on the nights of Monday 28 September and Friday 2 October, for carriageway reconstruction.
  • A11 southbound slips at Tuttles Lane, Wymondham, and at Mulbarton: overnight into Saturday 3 October, for grass cutting and planting by Ringway.

What it means for you: the A47 through Broadland is clear at night this week, as far as the published report goes. Heading for Great Yarmouth late on Friday, expect the westbound diversion at Gapton Hall on the way home.

Felthorpe: five lanes, one at a time

Norfolk County Council is putting up new traffic signs in Felthorpe. It has advertised closures on five roads from 28 September to 16 October 2026, with a backstop of 27 November. The notice says the closures apply between 9am and 3pm on weekdays only, and that only one road will be shut at a time, as shown on signs on site.

The roads, and the diversion the notice gives for each, are:

The notice does not say which road goes first, so check the signs before you set off (Norfolk County Council temporary traffic notices, published 18 September 2026).

Acle, Hellesdon and the rest of the new county orders

The same batch carries these Broadland closures, all advertised to start in the next fortnight:

  • Acle, The Street: 40 metres north of Old Road, 1 to 7 October, for CityFibre duct and cabinet work. Diversion via Old Road and Bridewell Lane.
  • Hellesdon, Drayton Wood Road: 236 metres south of St Andrews Road, on 29 September, for county council carriageway repairs. Diversion via St Andrews Road and Westwood Drive.
  • Halvergate, Freethorpe Road: 250 metres south-west of Mill Road, 28 September to 2 October, for CityFibre chamber work.
  • Hemblington, Hemblington Hall Road: 40 metres east of Mill Road, 28 September to 2 October, for Openreach.
  • Great and Little Plumstead, Sandhole Lane: 40 metres near Highfield, on 1 October, for Anglian Water manhole repairs. Diversion via Salhouse Road and Crowes Loke.

A second batch published the same day adds the Lindsay Road closure at Sprowston, 24 September to 1 October, for Anglian Water (Norfolk County Council traffic notices, published 18 September 2026).

The county normally publishes a new batch each Friday. No Norfolk batch dated 25 September had appeared on the Public Notice Portal as at 29 September, checked from seven Broadland postcodes (NR6, NR7, NR8, NR10, NR11, NR12 and NR13). The 18 September batch appeared several days late, so closures starting in the second week of October may not be listed here yet.

Trains: no trains out of Norwich on Sunday 11 October

Greater Anglia has now published its October alterations. The one that matters most for Broadland is Sunday 11 October. On that day:

  • buses replace trains between Norwich and Stowmarket, so London trains run from Stowmarket only
  • buses replace trains between Norwich and Great Yarmouth, and Norwich and Lowestoft, the Wherry lines through Brundall, Lingwood, Acle and Reedham
  • buses replace trains between Norwich and Sheringham, the Bittern line through Salhouse and Hoveton and Wroxham

Two smaller alterations come first. Buses replace trains between Norwich and Ely on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October (Greater Anglia). And from Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 October, the 23:30 from London Liverpool Street to Norwich is replaced by a bus between Ipswich and Norwich, calling at Stowmarket and Diss (Greater Anglia).

Greater Anglia’s pages do not give replacement bus times or say how much longer journeys will take. For most of Broadland the London journey starts at Norwich anyway, and our guide to the trains from here sets out the options.

What it means for you: if you are going to London, the coast or a match on Sunday 11 October, allow extra time for the bus, or drive to Stowmarket for the London train.

Blofield: Woodbastwick Road reopens on 30 September

Woodbastwick Road is closed from 125 metres south of Bullacebush Lane for 680 metres northwards while CityFibre Metro Networks installs a new duct, cabinet and chamber. The order is made and runs 10 to 30 September 2026, with a legal backstop of 11 November.

The published diversion is long, and most of it is trunk road. It runs via Woodbastwick Road, Mill Road, Pedham Road, South Walsham Road, Newport Road and the A47, then Shack Lane.

Read the backstop the way the council writes it. A temporary traffic order carries a long stop date so the authority does not have to re-advertise if a phase slips. It is not a forecast that the road will be shut until November (Norfolk County Council temporary traffic regulation orders, published 4 September 2026).

Newton St Faiths: four gas closures still overlap

Cadent’s gas main replacement north of the airport is at its busiest. Four closures are running at once, and each one’s diversion uses one of the others.

  • Old Norwich Road: 150 metres southwards from just north of Blind Lane, plus the first 25 metres of Blind Lane, to 5 October. Diversion via Blind Lane, West Lane, Church Street and Crown Road.
  • Back Street: from its junction with Blind Lane to Abbey Road, to 2 October. Diversion via Blind Lane, West Lane and Abbey Road.
  • Abbey Road: from Back Street to West Lane, to 16 October. Diversion via Back Street, Blind Lane and West Lane.
  • West Lane and a second stretch of Blind Lane: to 9 October. West Lane closes from Abbey Road to New Home Lane, and Blind Lane for 85 metres south-east of New Home Lane.

The 18 September notices list Abbey Road and West Lane again, with the same dates. Norfolk County Council is the highway authority for all of them and is the body to ask what the signed route will actually be on the ground. We have not been able to confirm which diversion takes precedence while four are live at once.

Sprowston: three months on North Walsham Road

North Walsham Road remains closed from Barkers Lane to Edwards Road while SSE Pipelines lays high voltage cable. The advertised dates are 24 August to 13 November 2026, with a legal backstop of 13 May 2027. The signed diversion is Barkers Lane, Cozens Hardy Road, Edwards Road (Norfolk County Council traffic notice, published 21 August 2026).

None of the council’s later notices changes those dates.

The two roads that carry Broadland

The Northway and the A47 meet at Postwick. Between them they carry nearly every journey out of Broadland.

Reepham Road: the Horsford objection deadline is 29 September

The change most likely to catch out a regular driver is not a closure at all.

A temporary 30mph limit has been in force on C261 Reepham Road in Drayton since 17 August, from the Broadland Northway roundabout to Drewray Drive. It is there to allow site access to a new development and the construction of a new roundabout. The order runs to 28 March 2027 (Norfolk County Council traffic notice, published 7 August 2026).

Further along the same road, the county council proposes a permanent change at Horsford. It would extend the existing 50mph limit on Reepham Road by 156 metres, so that it covers 4,109 metres in total. Two short lengths of shared footway and cycle track, 3 metres wide, would be built on the western side.

The deadline for objections is Tuesday 29 September 2026. They must be in writing, must give reasons, and go by email to trafficorders@norfolk.gov.uk. The draft order and plans are on Norfolk County Council’s Citizen Space site (Norfolk County Council notice, published 4 September 2026).

In Acle, a permanent 20mph zone covering Cavell Road, Kemp Avenue and Martin Way came into operation on 17 August (Acle 20mph Speed Limit Zone Order 2026, published 14 August 2026).

Reedham swing bridge is fixed

The repair that took the Lowestoft trains away on two August weekends is finished. Network Rail said on 2 September that the new central bearing is in and the 123-year-old bridge is swinging again, ahead of the mid-September date it had given itself. Broadland Northway: still under a long order

The A1270 Broadland Northway is the district’s spine: 12.4 miles of dual carriageway opened in April 2018, running from the A47 at Postwick round the north of Norwich to the A1067 Fakenham Road.

Norfolk County Council’s Reclamite spray and asphalt rejuvenation programme on it began on the slip roads on 28 July 2026, under an order whose backstop runs to 20 February 2027 (Norfolk County Council traffic notice, published 17 July 2026).

No new Northway phase appears in any notice since. Read the order as “intermittent overnight lane closures into the winter”, not “the road is shut until February”.

Park and ride

Two of Norwich’s park and ride sites are in Broadland, and both sit on the ring described above.

Airport Park and Ride is at Buck Courtney Crescent, NR6 6JT, just off the A140 north of the city. It has 620 customer spaces, including 24 disabled bays and four electric vehicle charging points, and parking is free for bus users. Route PR1 runs seven days a week on electric buses, up to every 14 minutes, and now runs right across the city to Thickthorn Park and Ride (First Bus).

Fares are per day, not per journey:

  • Adult: £3
  • Young person aged 5 to 19: £2
  • Concession: £2
  • Duo, any two people travelling together: £4
  • Group, up to five people of any age: £5

First buses out are 05:55 on weekdays, 07:30 on Saturdays and 08:15 on Sundays and public holidays. The last bus back from Castle Meadow is 20:14 on weekdays and Saturdays, and 17:47 on Sundays and public holidays. If you miss it you can still walk into the site, because the vehicle barriers open automatically to let you drive out.

Postwick Park and Ride sits at the eastern end, where the Northway meets the A47, and is served by route PR3, run by Central Connect, which reaches Norwich Railway Station in 11 minutes before going on to Castle Meadow and the Bus Station (Bus Times). That station stop is the point: if you are heading for a London train, Postwick is the natural place to leave the car.

Station parking

Broadland’s own stations are small and their car parks are smaller. Brundall, Brundall Gardens, Lingwood, Acle, Buckenham, Cantley, Reedham, Salhouse and Hoveton & Wroxham are all unstaffed or lightly staffed halts on the Wherry and Bittern lines, and none has commuter parking on a Norwich scale.

If your regular journey is to London, the honest answer for most of the district is Postwick park and ride into Norwich, or driving to Norwich station. The branch stations work best if you can walk or cycle to them.
