Bring old kettles, microwaves, laptops and electric mowers to Lingwood Village Hall on Monday 19 October, 10am to 2pm. TVs, monitors and fridges are not taken.

Broadland District Council is running a free drop-off for unwanted electricals at Lingwood Village Hall on Monday 19 October, from 10am to 2pm. The council is running it with its waste contractor Veolia. It announced the event on Monday (council news, 12 October).

It is most useful for the things that will not go out with your bins. The weekly kerbside collection only takes electricals that fit in a carrier bag. This event takes microwaves, printers, hoovers and electric lawnmowers too.

The quick answer

  • Where: Lingwood Village Hall, Station Road, Lingwood, NR13 4AZ.
  • When: Monday 19 October, 10am to 2pm.
  • Cost: free. The council’s notice mentions no booking.
  • Not taken: TVs and monitors, fridges, freezers, washing machines and other white goods.

What you can bring

The council’s recycling events page says the Lingwood event takes the same items as its list of accepted electricals. That list includes:

  • kettles, toasters, blenders and irons
  • microwaves
  • PCs, laptops, tablets and household printers
  • hoovers and carpet cleaners
  • electric garden tools and lawnmowers, and small power tools
  • games consoles, cameras, radios, DVD and CD players
  • phones, cables, chargers and remote controls
  • hairdryers, straighteners, shavers and electric toothbrushes
  • LED lights and Christmas lights, torches and small bedside lamps
  • clocks, watches and calculators

What will be turned away

The same page lists what the council cannot take:

Not accepted Where it can go instead
TVs and monitors A council tip
Fridges and freezers Norwich North tip only, in Broadland
Washing machines, dishwashers and other white goods A council tip
Lightbulbs A council tip
Vapes and e-cigarettes A council tip
Glass or ceramic items, such as slow cookers and glass kettles Not covered on the county’s list
Business waste or hazardous waste Not accepted at this event

The “where it can go” column comes from Norfolk County Council’s types of waste its recycling centres accept.

Our Broadland tip opening times page has the hours, the booking rules and which tip takes fridges and freezers. Both tips are closed on Wednesdays, and you have to book a slot before you go.

What it means for you

If you live in Lingwood, Burlingham, Blofield or Brundall, this is the simplest way to clear a cupboard of dead gadgets. Lingwood is about eight miles east of Norwich, just off the A47.

For small items there is no need to wait for an event. Broadland collects small electricals, batteries and textiles from the kerb every week, on your bin day. Put them out by 6.30am in a tied, weatherproof carrier bag next to your bin, with each type in its own bag (electricals, batteries and textiles). Bin liners and black sacks are not collected. Our bin collection days page has the full rules.

The event matters for anything bigger than that. The alternative is a booked trip to Strumpshaw or Norwich North.

The council has not said whether it will run more of these in Broadland. Its events page tells people to watch its website and social media for future dates.

Why the council is doing it

“Many of us have old or broken electrical items tucked away in cupboards and drawers,” said Councillor Jan Davis, Broadland’s portfolio holder for environmental excellence. She said the event “makes it easy for residents to recycle them responsibly”.

The council’s last reuse push went well. Its school uniform swap shops this summer saved 2,344 items from waste, according to the same events page.
